the Art Ensemble of Chicago with JOSEPH JARMAN,ROSCOE MITCHEL. Hampel meets ANTHONY BRAXTON and LEO SMITH  and ARCHIE SHEPP in Paris 1969. He performs with PHILLY JOE JONES and TONY SCOTT at the BERLIN JAZZ FESTIVAL, and plays with SUNNY MURRAY  a.o.
1969, on the 8TH of JULY , he records his new concepts of  music which experiments with his contribution to the molding of what is now considered to be new and creative approaches in written and improvised music for individual musicians and improvisors and collective conversations : voices together : THE MUSIC OF GUNTER HAMPEL with an international cast : 3 masters from the USA and 3 from Europe with ANTHONY BRAXTON,JEANNE LEE,STEVE McCALL and WILLEM BREUKER ,ARJEN GORTER., revealing new structures for what was then called „New Jazz" or „Free Jazz". The LP/CD is still regarded as one of the ALL TIME GREATS Jazzcontributions to the evolution of the Music of the 2oTH Century by international musicians and critics  and is listed in every jazzbook and dictionary around the world. At the time Hampel did not find any label to publish this LP so he founded his own label :
BIRTH RECORDS to publish his new music without commercial interference.Down beat magazine gave ++++ 1/2 stars as well as his second release, a SOLO-LP from 1969 :DANCES. The 8TH of July was later on released in the USA by BOB THIELE on FLYING DUTCHMAN -RECORDS, and served as another entree to US-listeners.

PHASE 4    1969-1992     NEW YORK CITY and the USA 
1969: Hampel moves to New York City.The producer BOB THIELE ,who had managed and recorded LOUIS ARMSTRONG,DUKE ELLINGTON,JOHN COLTRANE,ARCHIE SHEPP,MARION BROWN, contracted Hampel for his FLYING DUTCHMAN label and made Hampel's music known in the USA. More than 4oo Radio Stations played his creativ and new, with european elements enriched, music  and made it known to the Jazzworld who heard for the first time Hampel,Braxton,Lee,McCall,Breuker and Gorter. The timing is perfect.Hampel performs with his different ensembles  in NEW YORK at the BLUE NOTE,SWEET BASIL,VILLAGE GATE,VILLAGE VANGUARD,SLUGS,STUDIO RIVBEA,  a.o.and in Washington,Philadelphia, Boston,Buffalo,performs at Colleges,"live" at Radio Stations, specially at WKCR at the COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY in NEW YORK and publishes performances on his BIRTH label. From now on, Hampel lives half of the year in New York and spends the other half in Europe on Tour, and makes Göttingen as his european headquarters.
In New York Hampel developes his music more and more. He designs concepts for Solo-pieces up to Big Band Arrangements..he studies with Frank Foster and others. His compositions gives his co-musicians enough space to develope their own voices within a collective team work : THE MUSIC OF GUNTER HAMPEL:

Since he is not copying US-Masters, but helps to develope Jazz in renewing the marriage between (his )european roots and the afro-american heritage, he gets widely accepted in the USA by musicians and jazzfans alike. In nightlong sessions and performances in the NEW YORK LOFT SCENE he initiates a new developement in New York which culminates in the foundation of his GALAXIE DREAM BAND in 1972, with which he is going to tour worldwide for more than 25 Years, spreading the news of a new music aera and recording numerous  LPs and CDs. Preceeding the GALAXIE  DREAM BAND was a TRIO with JEANNE LEE voc and PERRY ROBINSON clarinet, which performed at the FRANKFURT JAZZ FESTIVAL 1972. They recorded for BIRTH (oo7 SPIRITS) and MPS/SABA :OUT OF NEW YORK.(plus Jack Gregg,bass)
Hampel records with DON CHERRY at the DONAU-ESCHINGER MUSIKTAGE, also with CHRISTOF PENDERECKY. Hampel performs at the DEUTSCHE OPER in BERLIN (the first and only Jazzgroup who ever performed there and recorded with HANS WERNER HENZE in ROM (Italy) for the DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHONE Henze's NATASCHA UNGEHEUER. Parts of Hampels compositions were used by Henze to demonstrate the huge power of Hampel's Music. Hampel remarks that in this one year of collaboration with Hans Werner Henze he extended his knowledge and visions of his own music . On the other side Henze emphasizes that the expressiveness of Hampels team-music is a milestone within the developement of Music.
Hampel records on BIRTH a TRIO-LP with JEANNE LEE and ANTHONY BRAXTON in Paris :FAMILIE (BIRTH oo8). Hampel forms his BIG BANDS : GUNTER HAMPEL NEW YORK ORCHESTRA (BIRTH oo39) and the WORLD COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA (BIRTH oo35/35).   Many compare his Big Band Music with the music of SUN RA, because it seems to integrate the whole cosmos. In the THEATRE FOR THE NEW CITY in New York Hampel gives concerts with sometimes more than 45 musicians at a time, including his Bands and guest Soloists from Jack DeJohnette to Frank Wright etc..
1976 sees Hampel on Tour with the SOLO NOW PROJECT (Hampel,Albert Mangelsdorff,Joachim Kühn,Pierre Favre) for the german GOETHE INSTITUT through CANADA and SOUTH AMERICA and 1978 on a tour through  ASIA  (Lp on MPS/SABA : SOLO NOW) produced by JOACHIM E.BERENDT:
In New York Hampel performs on flute with the SUN RA ORCHESTRA at the Hudson-River.

DOWN BEAT INTERNATIONAL JAZZ CRITICS POLL crowns GUNTER HAMPEL to the world-best No1. NEW STAR JAZZ VIBRAPHONIST in 1978. In the following  2o years Hampel is listed among the 8 best  established Vibraphonists in Jazz. He is  called the inventor of a new Vibraphone-style in Jazz, a complete own way of playing the instrument,let it speak a different voice
