Hampel composes in New York a whole new repertoire to integrate the rap-concept with his own jazz-style and appears at the Festival with a whole new Band of „bloodyoung" new talents of jazzmusicians,singers,dancers and rappers, he hires from all over germany and invites his (and Jeanne Lee's )son RUOMI LEE HAMPEL and 2 german rappers to write and do free-styling rap and poetry -improvisations from their own lives, independent from the USA rapping,, +2 background singers and mixes it with his collective free-music and has the jazzmusicians,rappers and singers as aculminating highlight do collective improvisations , all at the same time. The performances are a sensation. The german Newsmagazin DER SPIEGEL dedicated a whole page to Hampels new Band : NEXT GENERATION ("The higher dimension") and emphasizes on how Hampel is capable to communicate with the young listeners and how he is carrying the idoms of Jazz into the current generation.

sponsored by the cultur department of the city and at the MusikTriennale in Köln , which featured composers who contributed new styles of music to the international musicscene in the 2oth Century like Stockhausen,Boulez,Ravel,Bartok,Mahler,Schoenberg, Hindemith, Debussy,Frank Zappa,Kagel,Villa Lobos,Messiaen,Boulanger,Carla Bley,John Cage,etc. Gunter Hampel was invited to present his music for 2 days at that renowned festival. Hampel selected 3 of his working groups :
On May 27,th : the GUNTERHAMPEL „HEARTPLANTS"QUINTET with Manfred Schoof tp,Alexander v.Schlippenbach p,Arjen Gorter b,Pierre Courbois dm ( they worked together 1964-66 and opened a new chapter for the european and international Jazz)("live" recorded on CD BIRTH oo45,LEGENDARY :The 27th of May 1997) and the GUNTER HAMPEL GROUP (1966-71)with Willem Breuker,Gorter,Courbois and his current most successful 11 piece unit : GUNTER HAMPEL & NEXT GENERATION with Christian Weidner as,Clemens Orth keyb,Christian Jaroslawski b,Gerrit Juhnke dm, Shaun Vargas (NYC) and Magnolia voices,Smudo (FF4) rap,Sprite ,Nore,Nuclear B. rap.+ his other current working group the GUNTER HAMPEL JAZZ QUINTET with Weidner,Orth,Jaroslawski and Juhnke .Both concerts were sold out and hailed to be highlights of the festival by the presse. The complete NEXT GENERATION CONCERT and 2 takes from the GUNTER HAMPEL JAZZ QUINTET got published on BIRTH , as KÖLN CONCERT ,Vol 1 and Vol 2 (BIRTH o47 & o48).
1998:Gunter Hampel reciewes the culture award of the governor of lower saxon,Gerhard Schröder(now the chancelor) + a money award for his world-wide cultural contributions. In the state ceremony Hampel presented his JAZZ QUINTET.
Hampel composed a 4 part suite, „ .God, forgive them,'cause they do not know what they are doing" and performed it at the Albani-church in Göttingen with his Quartet: Weidner,,saxes, Juhnke dm and K.Madadi perc.
Hampel plays vibes and flute on a 5o concerts-tour with the Jazzkantine in Germany,Austria and Switzerland, culminating with a performance at the MONTREAUX JAZZ FESTIVAL (July 14th)
NEXT GENERATION can be heard on a "live" VIDEO from May 28th,98 :"OSNABRÜCK, and a video from BONN, Nov.28 with Perry Robinson as special guest.
Hampel composed the music to Garcia Lorca's Theaterpiece : In his Garden..and performs it with his percussionist Kaveh Madadi. at the JT Theatre in Göttingen.

GUNTER HAMPEL 1958-2oo8=5o years on tour around the world 1 january 7th the european trio plays an publishes the DVD o8o1o7 ALL IS ONE at the jazzclub Hannover.march 6th Gunter is holding a well recieved lecture at the CULUMBIA UNIVERSITY- NEW YORK ;at the LOUIS ARMSTRONG JAZZ STUDIES with sensational aspects about the development of JAZZ , available on DVD in english. and performs on april 3 rd in brooklynn. and the book cafe in staten island, april 12 th, records live on the air at WKCR solo vibes pieces on april 13th. and is again on WKCR, playing his on birth recorded music live on the air.and does a recording with the earth people and a solo vibes recorimg im staten island.
