"gunter does a marvelous job of sustaining notes an dletting them shimmer in the air, giving this piece a dream like haze. one of the things that i dig about gunter hampel's music is, that all of his songs develop in a way that one can hear atheme and then follow the inner logic or thread that runs through each piece- we can follow the story within the song. he presents one theme and then dances around he melody with shimmering shades swirling around it. "stretching" is an eyquisite, haunting ballad-like work that is slow and quietly mesmerizing. Gunter has started his vision of his music back in 1954 . he needed more freedom of choice in his improvisations ,following his heritage in germany to get away from the chordal playing using the european classical avantgarde music to improvise in fields other than the quint and quartcycles. he developed play-forms where each instrument started to play outside the fixed norms , as in swing and bebop and improvising on popular standards. bass and drums became as important an equal melodic contributor as the hornplayers and within training of listening to each other he developed in his bands simultaneous collective improvisations. since he started with the oldtime, swing and bebop concepts, he is a swinger in his heart, but also a soulfull poetic thinker and an incredible improviser.being an excellent bandleader and composer and multi-instrumentalist he combined composing with improvising while coaching his team while it kept playing, instantenious conducting and developing a compositional lead , knowing each's player's limit, he combines the collective's strength in a joyous playfullness. this way his personality , his way of being comes out through his music and he himself is fullfilling his potential and dreams to create a music, which he says could lead to an enlightened society. because the communication between the players must be coming from the heart of each to combine on such a high and energetic level . in 1969 he released with birth oo1 THE 8th OF JULY 1969 his documentation of his own music, his own view, his own reality and started, invented a new jazzstyle. his way of freedom is not letting all the anger out , he is the inventor of a freedom-seeking and making communikation music rather than blowing war and frustration. to use a pic of malcolm X, he shows his clear glass of water. today his music has become a youthfull spirited joyous and harmonic and playfull meeting platform, presenting solutions to our way of life and our thinking, presenting a knowledge about what the human being is capable of when he combines his free flowing energy with the breath of creation .in putting this band about 8 years ago together and working continuously in all different performing situation, from playing on jazz festivals, clubs, adding dancers to the band, playing in punk-clubs in berlin or at an international jazz festival in lisboa portugal ,playing with children , playing in galleries,playing for large as well as small audiences , conducting workshops, playing for young audiences as well as those jazz audiences.

.this is one of the freshest and most sensibel and creative jazzbands this world has ever heard and seen .

What an anusual guest in Göttingen's  Junkernschänke: Gunter Hampel, a  Göttingen born Multi-Instrumentalist, who is enjoying the respect as well of the  american  as of the  european Jazzscene , offered with his  „European Trio“ first rate Free Jazz. Johannes Schleiermacher  Tenorsaxophon and Bernd Oezsevim drums proofed with over- bubbling creativity and joyous performing that you need have no fears to count them in as „Young Lions“ of the global Jazzscene .

Creativity and joyous play : Bernd Oezsevim, Gunter Hampel and Johannes Schleiermacher (from left). the quiet opening into the concert was carried out by Hampel with his piece „Smiling Energy“ on his Bass clarinette, before Oezsevim ringed in a swing-rhythm  with the first  „dropping bombs“ of the  Bass drum . a basis  which schleiermacher used for an extended improvisation, which gained even more attraction when he threw the spontaneous improvised musical motives forwards and backwards with Gunter Hampel: an act of  free rein creativity far off tonality but even catchy  for  ears not being used to listen to jazzmusic like this.  no one can do this better. impossible for anyone to do this better

it is absolutely enjoyable that the european trio has found it's own stile, which leaves no doubt about their skills.

the 3 musicians spared no trouble as well, to combine the most different sound-colors with each other and seemed to be  spontaneous to decide which number of their repertoire they would play next.

hampel soon changed from his roaring bass clarinet to the vibraphone and flute, schleiermacher managed the peak of his solo with his mouthpiece alone, while Oezsevim produced sounds, which reminded me of a rusty garden-door. beautifully crazy, but qualitively above all ,at the outer limits of what is possible. tirelessly and for a long time Hampel is taking care of sponsoring promising young talents. this engagement , so proofs the "european trio" , is functioning extraordinary ,remarkably excellent. by --- Jonas Rohde -----

A memorable concert, an adventurous journey through sounds, most of the audience had never heard before in their lives.New 18 year young talent discovered by Gunter : Joachim Schleiermacher tenor and altosax. Gunter Hampel, the composer,made a wonderfull programm to introduce his music to the audience. He continously spread the whole jazzhistory out, to use known structures and started to develop the musical structures until they took the audience and themselves into their own territory and then took off : bluesy collective-improvisations, which were breathing the spirit of the Marching Bands in New Orleans in the "Gunter Hampel-way", exploding riff-playing with reminiscents to Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, nerveous pulling Bebop-lines and wonderful new themes by Gunter played in the Miles Davis-kind of blue-phase. But Hampel also lead his listeners in unknown spheres : An asiatic Fantasie-landscape, when he improvised on his flute with exotic, metallic sounds from the drummer, which reminded of balinesque Gamelan-music, played on pots and cans !! When Hampel started his excursions on solistic Vibraphon-playingthe listener seemed to be led into a mysterious Mirror-palace full of transperent, shimmering and shining sound complexes. Ecstatic collective improvisations of yelling intensity and hymnic saxophonsoli by Johannes Schleiermacher. The drummer Bernd Oezsevim is one of the greates talents in german Jazz !
And the dancers Prince Alegs and Hichem : Additional accents, they whirled acrobaticly and bizarre, stood on their heads, rotated on one hand-stands, translated the music into their own body-language, which's technics were reminiscent of breakdancing, b-boy-dancing-Capoeira and modern-dance-elements. Therte where also poetic moments, when Gunter Hampel and Prince Alegs perfomed DUO-pieces, when Prince Alegs moved in slow-motion , acting and re-acting with the music of Hampel's bassclarinet, who in return took his inprirations from Prince Alegs'smovements
At the end of the concert there was an ad hoc Jamm Session with local breakdancers : The
enthusiasm of the audience reached the high peak, 2o Minutes the dancers are storming on stage, cheered and appaluded by an thrilled audience.

There are only a few poeple living in the world who are capable of doing this.
Hampel's other treasures are his compositions. Who has heard all of his great works  ( more than 8o CDs and LPs and , Videos and now DVDs) besides his famous concerts around the world( now since more than 45 Years !) and his heard how other jazzgreats : Jeanne Lee-Marion Brown-Anthony Braxton, Steve McCall-Marvin Smitty Smith-Sunny Murray,Perry Robinson,  and many others have used his tunes as fountainheads for their own improvisations, knows, how Hampel's tunes have their own magic and seem to get the most out of an improviser.
In this concert Hampel relates to new written stuff,some of it  he has been exploring with the musicians, dancers,singers and rapper before. A written tune becomes   a different compositions every nigth they play these pieces. They grow too, like children..They are , as thrilled visitors of the concert said : FRESH ! Everything around Hampel and his crew, is fresh, new and exciting. They explode with their furious energy. Their secret ? They listen.On this DVD you can now SEE , how the band works
Hamid Drake, who heard this Band last November , stayed throughout their performance and was amazed about the togetherness with which this unit performes. It is as if they all are linked by their great respect for each other's creativ possiblities and talent. To be in the presence of creativity and see and hear how this works, makes you being a part of this higher energy. And that feels rigth.
Luckily this concert was documented, though at some parts ( only a few seconds) the camera had to be moved and while filming, been relocated.Hampel did not want to cut anything out- it would be missed in the compositions flow...
But instead of the usual 6o minutes, we get here 85 + 35 min of an uplifting rehearsal in Gunter's Hotelroom . In my opinion, this is an incredible document of one of our greatest innovative  composers in music of our time. Hampel and his incredible pool of Mega-talented, future masters -Gunter, how do you find these people ????--the  n e w  NEXT GENERATION is one of the most exciting bands in the world.

So did the 6oo people.They clapped and yelled to get them back, just another bright moment for a band which consists of : Vibraphone,drums,flute,bassclarinet,2 bodies,which's dances are like you SEE MUSIC-wow !, 2 tenorsaxophonists who alter on altosaxophone,1 singer, one poet, . All you need are 2 ears and 2 eyes opened. When the video starts the group is playing in a hallway with people walking past, some checking them out and others just walking by. They walk down the aisle of a theatre improvising on a rhythm groove, the percussionist playing a hand drum, both Gunter & Johannes playing reeds as two dancers march in front. They make their way up onto the stage and the performance continues. Prince Alegs is a most expressive dancer and he and another dancer do a fine job of matching the music with their limber bodies. Soon Gunter switches to vibes and the trio takes off for the stratosphere, swirling freely together. All of this is captured with one hand-held camera, yet it works as the lone camera-person knows exactly where to shoot. When Gunter takes a nice unaccompanied vibes solo, Prince takes a fine slow motion dance solo. When Gunter switches to flute, the trio take off for quieter space until they get back into the next groove. Who did actually start with the concert? drummer Bernd Oezsevim tenderly carresses for quite a while his drumset, while Johannes Schleiermacher too seems to try out little percussion instruments. while the audience in the 3RAUM in Hannover is still discussing the news of their day, gunter hampel and his music+dance improvisation company secretly sneak themselves into their concert. eventuallysometime, they  play for real.: Hampel- you just saw him standing with a video-camera in hand-suddenly stands behind his vibraphone, on which still is resting a pile of music-sheets, strikes a few notes on it-and then he dedicates his whole attention extensively on his bass clarinet. a concert begin which could not be more inconspicuous. Hampel. the forerunner of european jazz, living in new york since 1969 makes since 4o years unobtrusively music for a niche audience. so why should he make all over sudden a big deal of announcing and celebrate a big  entrance scene. Even on the day, on which our government quite officially acknowledges his achievements, Hampel remains a master of understatement: "We are  in town today ,because we had something to do with the towns authorities" he says, as if he only was here to register a new car." as if it wasn't such a big deal, that the prime minister of culture and science Lutz Stratman had thanked the staying young 72 year musician for his life-time achievements with the medal of honor of the federal republic of germany, the highest civilian medal. the awarding ceremony this afternoon was worth  a small concert the band gave and Hampel later says: our music made the bureaucrats pretty good get going.     the evening after this visit with the authorities was followed by this more than 2 hour long performance for a-more presumably-jazz oriented audience. With his Quartett,with Oezsevim on drums,Schleiermacher on tenorsaxophone and Andreas Lang at the bass Hampel leaves swiftly beaten out jazz-tracks. like an accordeon, die compositions seem to stretch outwards until they almost are not anymore to be kept together, but with one move they fall back in line. hampel has co-invented and co-coined the free improvisation in jazz, the spontaneous natural COMMUNICATION-exchangE   live on stage        and lets still , today , fall down all limits.  in his MUSIC+DANCE IMPROVISATION COMPANY young breakdancers may realize in addition    their impovisational spontaneous dancing talents in relation to the spontaneous music improvisations. they translate  the tight rhythmic passages of the concert into acrobatic turns and jumps. this way Hampel connects not only his tradition with the youth-cultur, but also brings the body back into  jazz. "just from their age and lifestyle most musicians in jazz do not like to move around anymore as in the past" he says. Hampel builds here on the youth. he surrounds himself with young musicians, offers workshops into the schools and instigates music-education and jazz-promotion.  often there is a lack of sponsor-money, but  now he has contacts to the ministry.
