>Jazz Vocalist Jeanne Lee Suffering from Colon Cancer

>Antwerp, Belgium -- Donations are currently being solicited to fund the

>medical treatment of avant-garde/free jazz vocalist Jeanne Lee. Lee,

>61, was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer in the Spring and has been

>receiving treatment following surgery to remove the cancerous cells. An

>intravenous treatment to block post-surgery mestastis has been

>successful, but her doctor has requested new treatment begin immediately

>at a special clinic in Mexico. Although she has been teaching at two

>conservatories in Europe since 1996, Lee has been refused by both health

>plans and is currently uninsured.

>

>Sparsely recorded and under-appreciated in America, Lee has worked with

>the biggest names of avant-garde/free jazz as one of the genre's only

>vocalists. From her recording debut with pianist Ran Blake on 1961's

>"Legendary Duets" on the Bluebird label, Lee went on to work with Archie

>Shepp, Sunny Murray, and Gunter Hampel later that decade. The 1970's

>saw her working with Cecil Taylor, Marion Brown, Anthony Braxton, and

>Andrew Cyrille. More recently she has performed with Peter Kowald and

>the Reggie Workman Ensemble, while also focusing on her own composing

>and continuing to teach. Lee holds a Master's Degree in Education from

>New York University.

>

>A deposit of approximately $10,000 is required for perfusion

>hyperthermia treatment to begin at the Amercian Biologics clinic in

>Mexico, and the three to four week treatment is expected to cost nearly

>$27,000. An account for donations has been established at the Emigrant

>Savings Bank in New York City. Checks should be made out to: Emigrant

>Savings Bank Credit to Account of Jeanne Lee-Hazelton and addressed to

>Emigrant Savings Bank, 5 East 42nd St., New York, NY 10017.

>

>The fundraising effort is being coordinated by Lee's daughters. For

>further information on Ms. Lee and her condition, please contact Naima

>Hazelton at naima7@hotmail. The family also asks that those who donate

>send their name, address, and contribution amount to

>cavana77@hotmail.com so the proper documentation and appreciation can be

>ensured.
