GUNTER HAMPEL
TRIO AT HALLWALLS

"This Saturday, Hallwalls and Resurrection Music will present an extremely rare appearance of a true living legend of modern music.
German composer/improviser, vibraphonist, bassclarinetist, flutist, arranger, producer, and all around perpetual innovator Gunter Hampel will bring his new New York Trio to Hallwalls" Blackn-n-Blue Theatre in a special no-admission concert appearance.

For nearly fifty years, Hampel has been performing and recording his highly personalized music in a plethora of contexts from solo to orchestral allover the world. He's a major instigator of Germany's free-jazz movement and is hailed as a patriarch of the Euroepean improvised music tradition and beyond.
He is known for his mastery of the vibraphone and bassclarinet in particular, but also for his skill as a composer and arranger.
Hampel has [pl;ayed with nearly every major European Jazz Musician and has had many collaborators over the years including his wife, vocalist Jeanne Lee, as well as Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton, John McLaughlin, Steve McCall, Marion Brown, and countless others.
His new New York Trio features long-time collaborator, clarinet master Perry Robinson who has worked with Hampel since the early "7os in his famous Galaxie Dream Band, and the prolific drummer Lou Grassi.
This is indeed a special opportunity and could be the only chance ever to hear Gunter perform in Buffalo.

THE ARTS
by Marty Levine

On a recent live recording from the Knitting Factory in New York City, German multi-instrumentalist Gunter Hampel and his New York Trio covers a lot of ground.
With his clarinet and saxophone (she means the bassclarinet),Hampel and fellow clarinetist Perry Robinson thoroughly deconstruct ragtime, with his primary instrument, the vibraphone Hampel creates etheral tones that pierce with arrogant sustains and, aletrnately, bop in an almost recognizable manner. Drummer Lou Grassi even provides some avant-breaks- throwing a bone to some super-progressive sampler out there.
Known for collaborations with the likes of his late wife Jeanne Lee and Anthony Braxton, Hampel is a true modern jazz legend.
