marching ,dancing , playing the Bassclarinette , pulling his crew on stage Hampel opens a set, releasing a firework of music, poetry and dance which soon developed to one of the(if not THE) highlights of the VISION FESTIVAL. For one hour the GLAXAIE DREAM BAND celebrated it's world-renowned power and style as one of the (now 33 years) leading cutting edge Avantgarde units. The first piece SMILING ENERGY , featured Hampel on bassclarinet, Robinson, clarinet, and Whitecage on alto,Lou Grassi on drums, building up their intuitive ,unique collective improvisations, as we have become accustomed too over the years from their great releases on BIRTH RECORDS. Only, the thickness and energy of this great band has grown into an incredible mastery, the poetry and dance are adding a multi-media dimension, making the performance into a contemporary, fresh and alive statement of the NOW.

..the final day of the VISION FESTIVAL in NEW YORK was a tribute to the legendary Jazz vocalist Jeanne Lee, who passes away, a few years back. Jeanne Lee was married to Gunter Hampel and was a part of his GALAXIE DREAM BAND for many years, this band has evolved over more than 3 decades and still exists today. This version includes longtime cohorts Perry Robinson on clarinet, Mark Whitecage on alstosax and clarinet, newcomer Lou Grassi on drums and Gunter on vibes, bassclarinet and flute. Jeanne and Gunter's son Ruomi read one of Jeanne's poem and danced along with Prince Alegs. Beginning freely, the quartet began spinning layers of lines together which always felt connected through their years of playing together, often with both dancers providing rhythmic moves inspired by the music. Gunter's writing embraces the long history of jazz and his tunes move through sections from different eras. All the players are veterans here and play long inspired solos. Gunter outlines the structure of the pieces with his dream sequenced vibes. A rich and varied set that moved through a number of inter-connected sections, sometimes lush and haunting, sometimes a quick paced weaving of themes.
